Bury Society For Blind
And Partially Sighted People
A charitable organisation caring for the blind and partially-sighted people in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury.
The Bury Blind society was founded in 1922, we aim to enhance the quality of life for all visually-impaired people in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury.
Bury Blind Society offer:
The Bury Resource Centre
We have specialised items and adapted equipment available to help the visually impaired with everyday living, both in and away from their homes.
These items range from talking alarm clocks, lights and powerful reading magnifiers.
Information Home Visits
For visually impaired people who would like to know more about the services available for them, informational home visits are available.
Home Visiting Service
Our volunteers are recruited and trained by the Bury Blind Society, then placed with visually-impaired people who they can help in a variety of different ways.
Part of being a volunteer is "being a friend" or a "listening ear" in addition to catering for needs, such as help with personal shopping, reading and regular activities.
All these things help to restore and regain the confidence which is so often lost because of visual impairment.
Advice And Information
Advice and information leaflets are freely available at the Resource Centre, they cover many issues surrounding visual impairment and may help to diminish some of your concerns.
Security Checks
We also do security checks in conjunction with the Police. If our clients feel that their home is not as secure as they need, one of our volunteers goes and checks the home. Information is then passed to the Police, who will replace or add more locks as required.
Hospital Information Service
Learning from an Opthalmologist at the Hospital Eye Clinic that nothing can be done for an eye condition can be devastating news, but a word of reassurance from one of our Hospital Information staff can help alleviate any concerns.
Library Services
All Public Libraries in the Borough of Bury contain a facility for visually impaired people and the main branches in Whitefield and Bury have more of these services than those in rural areas.
The Public Libraries and our Resource Centre provide information which is accessible in formats such as large prints, audio tape or braille.
Daily Living Skills
Newly registered blind and partially sighted people may find it difficult to perform everday tasks in their home. Our aim is to help people to adapt and cope with these daily tasks so they can maintain their independence.
Social Activities
Research has shown the onset of visual impairment usually results in the loss of social contact. The Bury Blind Society is constantly asked for help with this problem.
Bury Blind Society organise monthly gatherings and an annual social gathering to bring together visually impaired people, providing them with the opportunity to socialise and enjoy themselves.
Fundraising
Bury Blind Society is constantly looking for new ways to raise money and so always has new fundraising events lined up.
