For any history lover this is a great small museum which provides an interesting summary of Johnson’s life and some of it's key periods.

Visited on a Saturday afternoon, having pre booked on the website. The museum is easy to find in the centre of Lichfield. A lovely lady greeted us warmly and explained the layout of the museum. She explained that some interactive exhibitions were out of order due to Covid precautions. We were free to explore the museum at our own pace, several of the rooms were laid out as they would have been during Johnson's time, we watched an informative video on the 1st floor and saw a first edition of the famous dictionary, and browsed through the facsimile copy that was on display. We were all delighted to see a photo of Francis Barber, a freed slave who moved to Lichfield and was Johnson's manservant before getting an inheritance and his freedom, though he remained in touch with Johnson. There are packs and a trail for children, and a bookshop near the entrance. We had a lovely visit and would highly recommend.

Brilliant little museum. Restricted numbers due to Covid, but all the better for that. Very enthusiastic and knowledgable man on reception and occasionally dragging punters in.
Prior to our visit, all I knew about Dr Johnson was from Blackadder!
It's free and well worth a visit.

In my view Samuel Johnson is seldom afforded the credit he deserves. In his house in the centre of Lichfield is the brithplace of a major literary figure who compiled the first major dictionery of the Engligh language. The house is several floors high, replete with memorabilia and on the top floor you can thumb through a facsimile of his remarkable dictionery. I think ther is also an original copy in the same room although I am not sure of that because I could not find a label to this effect . This was an enjoyable place to visit and it well plays tribute to a great man.

What a delightful hour or so spent learning about this great man of literature. We were greeted by our first names having booked online and the receptionist was very helpful in answering ang questions about Samuel Johnson and the City of Litchfield in general.

Definitely not an attraction to miss if in the area.

The museum is located in the centre of the city and although the bookshop in one part was open the museum was closed. Can’t tell you much more except come on another day.

We were in the local area and were intrigued by this museum so decided to visit Lichfield. To say it's in central Lichfield is understatement and their website contains instructions on how to get there by many means of transport.

The museum, as the name suggests, is the birthplace and early home of Samuel Johnson. Each floor contains information on his life progressing as you ascend. There is an interesting video to give his general history and much more on each of the floors along with actual artifacts.

My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it highly.

The dictionary defines a fish as:
a limbless cold-blooded vertebrate animal with gills and fins living wholly in water
Considering the word is in his book, you'd think they'd have one in his birthplace. However, I could not see one aquatic being during my time in his original abode. Think I will stick to The Fountain.

We live about 12 miles from this wonderful museum .All three grandchildren have been many times and always spot something they hadn’t seen before . You need to be a bit active to climb the staircases to the various floors with it being a 5 storey building . The staff welcome you as you enter the front door and there is a quiz sheet for the children encouraging them to find a cat on each floor and writing down it’s name. They get a sticker at the end and sometimes a chocolate ...this isn’t a big prize house it’s a fun visit to learn about the 18 th century . One room has clothes for children to dress up in . Sometimes one of the rooms has craft activities . It’s a good place to visit on wet days when Beacon Park is not suitable . Toilets are available next door and the museum is free .

An elegant 5-storey Georgian house in the middle of Lichfield, this munsuem will tell you a multitude of things about Johnson, his life and friends. There is a facsimile of his dictionary for you to browse through. And on the walls his famous quotes and witticisms. A little film, narrated from the viewpoint of one of his friends, tells of his life and work, useful particularly for people who can't climb all those stairs to the top floor. And it's open 7 days a week, we were told, and entry free is of charge.

I am fascinated by the influential people of the 18th century so I loved this little museum and spent an hour and a half in there. We received a warm welcome from a helpful member of staff and then we were free to explore the home of Samuel Johnson's parents. I really enjoyed the story of how he was poor for most of his life until he received a pension of £300 per year and was then able to set up The Club at the Turk's Head Inn with Joshua Reynolds where they met up with the likes of Boswell, Garrick, Burke and Goldsmith. I also think that it's great that his wife Elizabeth was more than 20 years his senior!

My husband and son who are not as interested in 18th-century history as I am both enjoyed the museum, too, although without me their visit would probably have lasted about an hour. We all had a postive experience.

An informative museum of Johnson's life. Friendly staff. Entrance is free but donations can be made. Lots of stairs so not accessible to all but there is a video to watch on the ground floor for those who cannot use the stairs. Well worth a visit for an insight into his life and work.
