We had our works Christmas do here for 30+ people and we stayed the night.
Front of house staff were lovely and welcoming, but that is all I can really say nice about our stay.
Our room was like something out of the 70/80s very twee and old-fashioned. Quilt cover had a rip in it. Bath looked old, faint smell of cigarette smoke. No soap, shower gel etc in the bathroom - to help save the planet apparently - you could request some at reception.
We were woken about 6am by what I assume was some kind of water cistern behind one of the bedroom walls that sounded like a plane going over head.
The party. Arrival time was stated as 7pm and most (about 180) turned up about then. We were all crowded into the bar which wasn't big enough and soon warmed up to a very uncomfortable temperature. They eventually let us in at 8pm. Drinks were astronomically expensive - £7.50 for a pint £8.20 for a Baileys or a large glass of wine (£25+ by the bottle) and £7.20 for a pint of coke!!!.
The main course wasn't served until after 9pm and my beef was dry and tasteless, though others who had the turkey said it wasn't bad. And my Xmas pudding was dry too.
All in all not somewhere I would ever go again and certainly don't know where it gets it 4 star rating from. I did voice most of my complaints to reception before leaving.

How sad it is that more people do not choose Venue 1886 at the Greenhous Meadow for their Sunday lunch! Once again we were treated to a lovely three course meal, beautifully presented and friendly, attentive service, why oh why do so few people take the opportunity to enjoy? In the past I have had mixed experiences but rarely does the food disappoint and this time improvements have been made, particularly in the plate department! Lovely, large plates for our main course and this is not about the size of the portion (which is always on the generous side), this is about the fact that there is plenty of room on the plate to see all that is there and of course it looks so much more appetising when not squashed up! The beef is always excellent and yesterday was no exception. It may be a little quiet for some, I have heard that the "lack of atmosphere" puts people off but on the plus side there is no banging and clanging of chairs on bare wooden floors, no constant hub bub to restrict conversation within your own group. Value for money, ample parking, good quality, well presented fare and all with attentive service; what's not to like?
