St Matthew’s Church is gearing up to a summer of fantastic gigs, including the return of a firm favourite, a singalong with a chemical taste and a local hero.

As part of Walsall’s live music scene you might not immediately think of the church at the top of the market. Everybody sees it, but not everybody knows about the vibrant concert series coming up.

This month, St Matthew’s Community Choir are giving a concert to showcase their talents and encourage participation – if you know the Hippopotamus song, you’ll know what to expect. Then in June there are two opportunities to enjoy live music in the church – Walsall Symphony Orchestra on June 15th (in the evening) and a recital by David Hardie on June 29th at 2pm.

David is the director of music at Birmingham Cathedral, so this is an opportunity you will not want to miss. Finally, as summer enters its full swing, Jessie Desai returns to the stage on her very first headline tour. Jessie was head girl at Bluecoat School, so grew up used to the surroundings of St Matthew’s every Friday at assembly.

Come along on July 20th to hear her headline a gig of singer-songwriters with sets from other local acts in support. St Matthew’s Church is the oldest building in Walsall – the crypt dates from the 12th century and the tower from not much later. You can drop in on Tuesdays for a coffee, and have a look around or come along on September 7th for a full tour including knowledgeable locals giving short talks on the building and its heritage.
