Fulham and Hammersmith are among the most vibrant and lively places to live in London. The area is also home to the biggest Australian community in the UK, and some of that relaxed Aussie vibe has definitely rubbed off on some of the area’s most popular night spots.
If you live in the Fulham, Hammersmith and Baron’s Court area, there is no need to travel into central London or the West End for a great night out. Here are four very different venues for a guaranteed night to remember.
Relax your way at The Little Blue Door, Fulham Road
Looking for a home-from home where you can relax with friends, but somewhere that is still sophisticated enough for a couple of cocktails with a date before you go on for dinner? The Little Blue Door is all you need.
From endless brunches to open mic nights to steak and oyster specials, there is always something different going on every day of the week. However, if you simply want to grab a comfy chair in the corner and maybe play a board game with a couple of friends, that’s fine too. The Little Blue Door is one of Fulham’s best kept secrets, so be careful whom you tell!
A traditional casino night at The Gloucester, Harrington Gardens
The Aussie love for a wager is the stuff of legends, so given the huge Australian community in the area we had to include a casino. Grosvenor Casino, still known locally as The Gloucester, is open all day every day, although there will be some exceptions to that over the next few months while renovation work is completed – more on that in a moment. The casino has dozens of electronic slots – or pokies as they are known in Australia, plus blackjack, 3-card poker, roulette and baccarat tables.
There’s also a fabulous restaurant and a comfortable bar area. Note that the Gloucester will have brief closures throughout early 2023 while a major programme of renovation is undertaken. While we await completion, there are plenty of Australian-style casino experiences available online at https://www.casinoaus.net/ where you can get your fix of pokies and other popular Australian casino games.
Rub shoulders with celebrities at Raffles, Kings Road
Raffles is one of London’s most exclusive night spots. It’s usually members-only but you can apply to get a place on the Saturday night guest list, and see if you get lucky. Dress to impress because you might just bump into a familiar face or two. William and Kate, the Prince and Princess of Wales are both members, as are TOWIE star Lucy Mecklenburgh, athlete Usain Bolt and Hollywood legend Johnny Depp, to name just a few.
Doors open at 10PM and the party keeps going till 5AM. The music on a Saturday night is a mixed bag of crowd pleasers, featuring house, RnB, dance and a little bit of Hip Hop too. All-guy parties are almost certain to get turned away, so be strategic in terms of your company for the best chance of admittance.
Beer, sport and good times at The Redback, Fulham Road
Let’s finish back where we started on the Fulham Road. If jeans and trainers are more your thing than dressing up to the nines and celebrity-spotting, The Redback is likely to fit the bill. It’s famous in the area for good times, reasonable prices and a party atmosphere.
If you enjoy your sport, there’s always something worth watching on the big screen, and if you have the urge to gamble but don’t want to walk down to the Gloucester, then a game of Bogan Bingo will scratch that itch, too. It’s a local tradition and if you want to find out what it’s all about, you’ll have to head over to Fulham Road and find out – no spoilers here!
