North London Hospice has appointed a new manager for its day services as the charity expands its specialist care this spring with a new state-of-the-art building in Enfield.

To complement its established services in Barnet, the hospice – which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year – will open its purpose-built day services at Winchmore Hill this May.

New manager Anneli Beesley (pictured below) says it’s an exciting time for everyone involved with North London Hospice’s latest development.

“We can’t wait to get started,” said Anneli, who brings experience of promoting wellbeing from a background of social work and psychology.

“We’re very proud of the new building and we’re hoping to reach many more people who need us from across Barnet, Haringey and Enfield.

“Day care for our outpatients will include a wide range of specialist treatments and complementary therapies – everything from reflexology to art therapy – as well as vital services including pain management.”

North London Hospice has launched its new charity appeal, called Hospice 100 – and Chief Executive Douglas Bennett is hoping the local communities will show support.

“Many people don’t know that North London Hospice is a charity,” said Douglas. “The majority of our money comes through fundraising - less than 25% comes from the NHS. These are tough economic times, but we can go from strength to strength with this new facility to complement our established services in Barnet.

“The Hospice 100 appeal and our other fundraising activities in 2012 will help us develop our specialist end-of-life care for our inpatients at Woodside Park, our day care visitors in Enfield, and for thousands of people in their own homes.”

Information about North London Hospice ...

  • It costs NLH £6 million per year to deliver the specialist end of life care services
  • NLH is a charity – 77 per cent of our costs are met through fundraising, while the NHS funds the other 23 per cent
  • The hospice cares for about 1,350 patients a year and we also support their families and their carers
  • Two thirds of our patients are cared for in their own homes by the hospice’s own specialist community nurses - most patients want to be cared for at home and the hospice does everything it can to make this possible through its community nursing team
  • Last year the hospice cared for 900 patients in the community, 300 inpatients at the hospice in Barnet, and 150 patients through day services
  • NLH relies on the local communities of Enfield, Haringey and Barnet to fund its specialist care – the hospice is always looking for new business partners.
