Barrow & District Disability Association

BDDA is an independent disability charity organisation providing information and advice for a range of disability issues along with a number of other essential services. They deal with enquiries both via telephone and in person at the Margaret Burrow Centre in the heart of Barrow-in-Furness.

Barrow & District Disability Association (BDDA) was formed in 1981 by a group of disabled people and professionals interested in disability welfare. At first the organisation operated from the homes of various disabled people, then in 1987 they acquired two derelict terrace houses to use as a drop in Centre.

Their Mission

To promote the welfare of disabled people in Barrow-in-Furness and the surrounding area.


Services Provided

BDDA provides a wide range of services from advice on specific disability issues to delivering a community-based social and activity programme. The centre provides a venue for delivery of educational and recreational courses, houses a cafe and complementary treatment room, offers a hire service from wheelchairs to minibus and acts as the hub for the disabled community of the district.

• Youth Services help disabled children aged 12-16, by organising regular activities on Friday afternoons.
• Wheelchair Hire, the BDDA do not charge a set fee to hire one of their wheelchairs, instead a small donation to the charity is appreciated.
• Social Club, groups meet regularly to enjoy a wide variety of social events and activities.
• Professional therapist, who is able to help with both everyday and complex medical conditions.

Training and Courses

The BDDA centre hosts a number of different courses both educational and recreational. Along with handicrafts, health and well-being workshops, art classes and IT courses are held. The courses are open to all and we cater for all levels of ability.

How You Can Help

The Barrow and District Disability Association receives the majority of their funds through fundraising and donations, therefore it is vital that members of the community help to support them.

Fundraising

As a totally independent charity, help is needed to raise the funds that run the organisation from day-to-day. That includes providing the services to disabled members and also ensuring the disabled community of Barrow-in-Furness and the surrounding district has an influence on local issues of concern, not just to members but for the benefit of all disabled members of society.

Volunteering

The gift of time is equally welcome. Without the sterling efforts of volunteers, The BDDA would find it difficult to continue in business. They require a range of skills and abilities to keep the organisation running smoothly but the main qualification is enthusiasm. They aim to help our volunteers achieve their own goals but are confident that in whatever activity they are involved, all will benefit from the rewarding experience of working with BDDA.
