There’s never a bad time of the year to appreciate the beauty of the Lake District, but now Spring is here, it’s the perfect time to get out and see exactly what the region has to offer.

If you love great views, plenty of fresh air, and love a challenge. Then the Cumbrian Way a great way to discover some of the very best scenery that the Lake District and Cumbria has to offer.

The Cumbrian Way is a 70 mile (or 112km if you prefer) linear long distance footpath that cuts through the heart of The Lake District National Park, starting at The Gill in Ulverston and ending in Carlisle City Centre. It’s not only a fantastic introduction to long distance walking, but to The Lake District too!  And it’s a low level route, making it perfect for beginners.

Following old packhorse tracks along valleys and over passes you can experience breath taking views of the mountains, valleys and visit charming little villages along the way. And because it’s a low level walk you won’t have to scale any summits either!

Most people who walk this route typically split the walk into 5 days.

Ulverston – Coniston

Coniston – Dungeon Ghyll

Dungeon Ghyll – Keswick

Keswick – Caldbeck

Caldbeck – Carlisle

You can camp along the way, but the majority of people take advantage of the companies that take your luggage from B&B to B&B each day along the route. It saves you time and energy and due to the often unpredictable weather; you can look forward to a nice hot meal and a warm bed every night (you’ll certainly have earned it!)

So if you’re up for a challenge and want to experience some of the most stunning scenery in the whole of the UK, then you should definitely consider walking The Cumbrian Way. It's definitely on my to do list!

They say that every great journey begins with a single step, and if you’re taking on the Cumbrian Way – your first step should be to get yourself booked into Virginia House in Ulverston. A great night’s sleep and a fantastic breakfast will ensure you start your journey on the right track!
