What inspires you to tackle climate change and protect nature?

That’s the question posed by the National campaign Great Big Green Week. It’s a national celebration of community action to educate people about our environment and local wildlife and how to help protect it for future generations.

Great Big Green Week sees all kinds of events take place. For 2024, they’ll be celebrating swaps – from clothes or book swaps, to skill swaps in allotments or upcycling workshops, to knowledge swaps on discussion panels or wildlife reserves.

The event runs from 8th - 16th June

Events are hosted by teachers, bus drivers, sport clubs, artists, community groups, places of worship, libraries, builders – anyone who cares about climate change.

Following the success of last years event at Ford Park they have been lucky enough to secure funding from Cumbria Action for Sustainability to hold a ‘Swap Together for Good’ event and to create a Community Herb Garden at Ford Park.

They will be holding a Swap event on Saturday 15th June from 11am until 3pm in the Williams Room and on the terrace where you can bring along baby bits (not clothes please), children’s toys and games, books, plants and seeds and swap them for other things.

It’s a great way to declutter of all the things you no longer need, and help others in our community while doing your bit for the planet and saving things from ending up in landfill!

For each item you bring along you will be given a token which you can use to swap for another item from the event.

You can bring along items to swap at 10.30am on the morning of the event, or if you can, on Thursday 13th June to the Ford Park Office.

Any items remaining at the end of the event will be donated to our local St. Mary’s Hospice shop.

Ford Park have also invited local groups to come along and talk about sustainability and there will be children’s crafts and refreshments available free of charge.

If you’re unable to attend the event but would like to donate suitable items, please email suzanne.edgley@ford-park.org
