It’s one of the main highlights (if not THE highlight) of the year for Ulverston, as it once again stages the incredibly popular Dickensian Festival.

The shops, streets and markets will be transported back to the Dickensian era, bringing nostalgia and plenty of Christmas cheer to the thousands of people who flock to the town over the two day event.

It’s truly amazing to see the effort that stallholders, shopkeepers, volunteers and members of the public go to, in order to make this event a treat for all the senses, and this years’ spectacle has plenty to offer the whole family.

The town will be lined with stalls, selling everything from roast chestnuts to jewellery. It’s the perfect opportunity to buy some unique Christmas gifts, or a great chance to treat yourself.

The Kid’s zone houses Santa’s grotto (with real reindeer!) providing a fantastic photo opportunity for parents and children. You’ll also have the chance to learn all about the reindeer – what they eat, where they come from; and most importantly – how they fly!

If you’re feeling hungry, then head over to Theatre Street. The Food Hall will once again be located on Theatre Street Car Park, where you’ll find plenty of tasty food stalls offering everything from hog roasts to paella, Indian street food to burgers - you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Last year’s popular busker zone returns, as does the children’s fairground which is located at the bottom of Market Street.

As always, local entertainers will keep the crowds entertained throughout the weekend with the usual array of weird, wacky and hugely enjoyable acts that help make the weekend so special.

And it wouldn’t be Dickensian without the costume parades. It’s great to see so many people make an effort with their period costumes each year. It seems that year on year, more people dress up in their Dickensian finery, adding to the atmosphere in the town.

If you’re visiting the town on Saturday, then hang around for the Christmas light switch on. It takes place at 4pm at market place – you won’t want to miss it!

So get down to Ulverston this weekend. Grab a bag of roast chestnuts, a glass of mulled wine (well it’d be rude not to) and soak up the incredible atmosphere that the Dickensian festival has to offer!

See you there!
