Oh How the Spanish Celebrated
I was fortunate enough to be in Spain last Wednesday when they won the semi final and got through to the final after playing Germany.
Oh what a night! What an understatement.
I was out on an annual holiday with my family and we spent a lovely day with some very dear friends down in Cabopino Port overlooking the marina and, had a fantastic meal at “Alberts”. My friend, fortunately for me, is the Chef. Albert’s is one of a chain of restaurants that are in the Costa del Sol.
After a fantastic day and meal we then headed back up through the mountains towards Mijas, which is a beautiful white washed typical Spanish town in the mountains. Then we came down through another village called, I believe, Alhaurin el Grande when Spain had put one goal past Germany and then, the final whistle went as we were going through and all hell broke loose! The Spaniards were on the road, beeping their horns and the Police had to shut off the roads.
We then got lost because we were diverted and eventually we got back on track 30 to 40 minutes later but, how fantastic it was to be part of that celebration. And then, for them to go on and win it on Sunday was great because, we were out there a few days previously and so we got wrapped up in it which, was great because they’re a great football nation.
Maybe there’s a lesson in all of this…. Throughout the entire celebration on that Wednesday night, there was no violence, it was all very, very happy, there were no drunks apart from happy drunks! I wonder if that would have been the case if it was England. Who knows? Let’s hope that we wouldn’t disappoint.
Notes on a postcard…..
