'The One Life We Have' exhibition of Art 2010 is a new and exciting venture organised by the Bedfordshire Humanists. The exhibition weekend runs from Saturday 24th to Sunday 25th July.
As far as we know, it is the first of its kind in the County. The title of the exhibition reflects the Humanist belief that, in the absence of any form of supernatural support or personal existence beyond the life we know, human problems can only have human solutions, and these are found through the application of reason, honesty and compassion. With shared values we can live good lives without religion or superstitious belief.
The Vox Humana or 'Human Voice' speaks through art and this forms the mainspring of the exhibition. Art communicates human ideas and values and visitors to the exhibition can vote for the piece of artwork that they like or impresses them most. If your artwork emerges as the most popular, we will let you know late Saturday afternoon.
From this exhibition, a wide variety of paintings, photography and sculpture is anticipated. Amateur and professional artists are welcome, as are humanists and non-humanists. Some contributing artists are already busy painting, working with various media, inspired by our themes:
Birth The Natural World Complexity
Evolution Ritual To be Human
Now! Time and Distance Mitochondrial Eve
Friendship Myth The Enlightenment
The Tree of Life Diversity Truth
Primordial Ocean Certainty and Uncertainty The Species comes of Age
But do not feel restricted in any way. You may exhibit whatever you wish!
Space is allocated on a first come first served basis. Exhibition tables are filling up very quickly. Early application is advised to avoid disappointment.
Contributing artists are invited to a Private Viewing during which wine and light refreshments will be served. It is hoped that the artist of the chosen work will attend the Private Viewing evening on Saturday24th July to be presented with the Bedfordshire Humanists Vox Humana 2010 award.
Maria Lopez and Nick Osbourne of Sharnbrook Upper School will talk about 'Open Way' and their aid work for some of the poorest in Ethiopia. Addis Ababa's street children receive emergency food and medical care directly through Nick and Maria's charity. 20% commission from the sale price of artwork will go to 'Open Way' (charity reg no. 1122055)
