Birmingham, UK – British-born Chinese actor and filmmaker Chi Lam, 20, is making waves in the film industry with the nationwide release of Cookster: The Darkest Days.
In this gripping crime drama, Chi takes on the role of Nate—the hardened, grown-up version of the film’s troubled protagonist. Audiences can experience the powerful true-crime drama at the UK premiere on March 6, 2025, at Borehamwood’s newly refurbished Reel Cinema, before its nationwide release at Vue Cinemas from March 7.
Based on the real-life experiences of author and producer Jason Cook, Cookster: The Darkest Days explores the struggles of a dyslexic teenager failed by both his family and the system. Reflecting on his role, Chi shared: “Playing Adult Nate was an intense and deeply rewarding experience. Stepping into the shoes of a character shaped by hardship and survival was a challenge, but bringing that depth to the screen was incredibly fulfilling.”
A Versatile Career in Film, Theatre, and Independent Filmmaking Beyond Cookster: The Darkest Days, Chi has built an impressive portfolio across feature films, theatre, and independent filmmaking. His recent film credits include: Dig Me No Grave – A horror-thriller by Ranjeet S. Marwa, screened at the Marché du Film in Cannes. Thirteen Cars – A crime drama directed by Rob Woods, starring Tamzin Outhwaite and Vas Blackwood.
In theatre, Chi has performed with the New Earth Theatre Company at Birmingham Hippodrome, further refining his stage presence. As the founder of Chi Lam Pictures, he has written and produced several festival-nominated films (The Bat, The Ranger). His upcoming short film Pak Choi—a heartfelt dramedy about an unlikely friendship—is currently in development with the NHS.
Additionally, Chi is working on the web series Noir! with BBC-affiliated producer Radley Russell. “I’ve always been drawn to quirky, creative storytelling. Whether it’s acting or filmmaking, I love bringing unique characters and compelling narratives to life.”
Advocating for British-Chinese Representation As a British-born Chinese actor, Chi is passionate about increasing East Asian representation in Western media.
“Chinese actors are still underrepresented in British media, and I want to be part of the change. My goal is to create more authentic, compelling stories that showcase diverse perspectives—both in front of and behind the camera.”
Chi is also musically accomplished, holding: Distinction in LCM Musical Theatre (Grade 8) Grade 5 ABRSM Violin Currently enrolled in MetFilm London’s Screen Acting course, Chi continues to refine his craft through both industry experience and formal training.
What’s Next for Chi Lam? With Cookster: The Darkest Days now released, Chi is focused on securing professional representation and expanding his creative projects.
