The St Basils pop-up shop in the Great Western Arcade was reportedly so popular it extended its month-long run to six weeks.

Thanks to the arcade’s owners, Ashtrom Properties, the charity was donated the space, and stock for the shop was from a company who vacated the unit and left it behind.

The boutique sold vintage football shirts from domestic and international teams, 90s inspired clothing, and sports memorabilia. A further donation of clothing came from the costume department of the BBC daytime show Doctors, which wrapped up filming in Birmingham after nearly 25 years. The shop closed with a spectacular records fair, with vinyl donated by the estate of local legend and tour manager Dee McLoughlin.

In six weeks, the store raised over £6,600. Once running costs are recovered, proceeds will be donated to St Basils, a local charity who seek to end homelessness amongst young people in the West Midlands.

St Basils works with young people aged 16 to 25 years old who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The charity supports over 4,000 young people a year, providing accommodation and support to help them move on to live independently.

Barrie Hodge, head of fundraising for St Basils, said: “Our first pop-up shop has been a real success. A big part of this has been thanks to all the volunteers who supported the shop, and of course everyone who came in and bought something. We have been incredibly lucky receiving some large donations from unexpected sources like the BBC show Doctors and the loved ones of Dee McLoughlin. It’s been a fascinating and worthwhile experience. And the money that was raised will make a real difference to the lives of young people experiencing homelessness in the West Midlands.”

Yvonne Moulton, centre manager, GWA, added: "Hosting the St Basils pop-up shop has been a wonderful experience for everyone involved, and we are delighted that the Great Western Arcade could contribute to St Basils' mission to end youth homelessness."

Altogether, 690 items were sold including a vintage ‘Street fighters’ video game machine, with the help of over 120 volunteers.
