This recognition celebrates Gabriel’s journey from a young resident in need of support to an influential leader within the organisation.

The announcement took place during the grand opening of The Coppice, the charity’s new office development, and in conjunction with the official acquisition of 83 homes at The Orchard Supported Scheme, where Gabriel used to reside.

The event was attended by dignitaries including His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of the West Midlands, Derrick Anderson CBE; The Lord Mayor of Birmingham and the Lady Mayoress; MP Paulette Hamilton; Councillor Ken Wood; Councillor Robert Alden; and esteemed board members, staff, and supporters of YMCA Heart of England.

Gabriel joined YMCA at the age of 19 after moving from emergency accommodation, having faced significant challenges, relationship breakdowns, and a sense of not belonging. With the support of YMCA staff, he soon became a valued member of the resident community, advocating for others who struggled to have their voices heard. His dedication led to his appointment as a resident representative and later to a position on YMCA’s housing subcommittee, where he championed the needs of residents who had experienced trauma and difficult beginnings.

His passion and commitment stood out, earning him respect across the organisation. He shared his powerful story at one of YMCA’s Annual General Meetings, leaving a lasting impact on attendees and demonstrating the life-changing work of the charity.

Over time, he gained confidence, pursued training and employment, and continued to give back to the community. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Gabriel was invited to join the Board of YMCA Heart of England, making history as the youngest trustee in YMCA’s 180-year existence at just 21 years old.

Gabriel’s room dedication is a tribute to his remarkable journey and the profound impact he has had on the organisation. Speaking about the honour, Gabriel shared: “It’s an honour to have a room named after me at the new Coppice offices at YMCA Heart of England. I hope my journey represents overcoming adversity and inspires others that might be facing similar difficulties to never give up.”

Speaking at the event, Pauline Tomlinson, CEO of YMCA Heart of England, also said: “It is such an honour to be a part of such a commemorative occasion – the purchase of 83 units of accommodation means we can continue to support young people and vulnerable adults in their time of need – providing safe and secure housing for them and in many cases their young families.

“We are also proud to be able to show case our renovated office spaces that will enable our growing commitment to supporting community and the neighbourhood’s we serve by providing much needed space for youth and community work, health and wellbeing programmes and for employability initiatives. These spaces give us an opportunity to work alongside some key partners who share our values and vision going forward for the betterment of the West Midlands.”

The opening event also marked the launch of YMCA Heart of England’s corporate sponsorship programme, inviting businesses to partner in creating lasting change for young people like Gabriel.

Guests were given a tour of the new facilities and heard testimonies from current residents, further highlighting the charity’s ongoing commitment to empowering young lives through housing, education, and support.
