James B Wong - Delivering Food to the NHS Heroes

James B Wong, Chairman of the Southside BID and the Chinese Festival Committee in Birmingham, has worked tirelessly with his team of volunteers during the lockdown in Birmingham>  In the war against COVID-19 he has brought support to the NHS Heroes on the frontline.  James is a restauranteur, being Managing Director of the Chung Ying Restaurant group in Birmingham, community leader and philanthropist.       On 7th May James and his volunteers visited John Taylor Hospice and bought a little cheer to all their staff with 70 lunches.  This is in addition to the tremendous generosity he has previously shown which includes:   (1) Free lunches for NHS staff at Sandwell General Hospital in West Bromwich   (2) Free lunches to NHS staff at Birmingham Children`s Hospital   (3) Lunch to NHS staff in 5 departments at Queen Elizabeth`s Hospital in Birmingham including the Critical Care Unit   (4) Lunch to NHS staff at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Northfield, Birmingham   (5) Lunch to NHS staff at Good Hope Hospital, Birmingham   (6) Donating 220 items of PPE (goggles) to Birmingham Children`s Hospital   (7) 100 free meals for the NHS staff at City Hospital, Birmingham   In March when Birmingham City Council announced that it had only 2 week`s supply of PPE James helped to donate more than £14,000 worth of supplies to health  care professionals.  This comprised of the donation of 2,000 N95 face masks and 1,000 coveralls to Public Health England based at Birmingham City Council.  Following advice from Councillor Ian ward, Leader of Birmingham City Council, pallets of PPE were delivered to the NHS Trust at Lancaster Circus.   "It was great talking to ward manager Clare Lewis" said James "about the struggles and challenges they have been facing during this pandemic.  A big thumbs up for all the great work they are doing".  James, who is  the founder at Midlands China Business Club, Governor at the Overseas Chinese Association School in Birmingham and Patron of the Chinese Community Centre in Birmingham.    "I think the chef next to me was the happiest of them all", joked James upon the delivery of the 70 lunches "as he didn`t have to cook for the staff this afternoon!"  James, who entered the NHS Covhead-19 challenge and shaved his head to raise sponsor money for the NHS, regards himself as a "Brummie" and is a fervent Birmingham City football fan.    The name of his restaurant, Chung Ying, reflects his community work in Birmingham.  "Chung means China" explained James "and Ying means England.  These two words inform everything I do to bring the community of Birmingham together.  Chung was also the name of my father and Ying was the name of my mother".
