A new play is to be performed at the National Trust’s Back-to-Backs in the Chinese Quarter of Birmingham on the eve of the Commonwealth Games.
The play, Coming to Birmingham: Making of a Modern City, is written by local poet and playwright Ian Henery and celebrates diversity and inclusivity in Birmingham.
“The play has a cast of actors of Chinese heritage,” explained Ian Henery, “ and was written as part of a trilogy for China West Midlands and the Chinese Community Centre Birmingham."
The first play, The Chinese Labour Corps, was performed in February and had a successful week-long run at The Blue Orange Theatre in Birmingham. The play was also part of the Chinese New Year Festival Online 2022.
“The play celebrates the migrants of Chinese heritage who came to Birmingham after the Second World War.” explained Ian Henery. “Not many people know about the history of Chinese immigrants settling in the U.K. and what they have achieved and done for this country. A play that demonstrates just this can have a big impact on society and how people view the Chinese community”.
The play will be performed at the National Trust’s Back-to-Backs in the Chinese Quarter on 25th July at 5.30pm. Tickets are just a donation to the National Trust.
