The full London 2012 torch relay route has been revealed, with Saffron Walden being named as one of the local towns the Olympic flame will pass through this summer.
Chairman of Uttlesford District Council’s Olympic Working Group, Cllr Mark Lemon, commented: “The announcement today really brings the route to life as we will all know exactly where we can see the flame.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our residents. I would be delighted to see as many people as possible lining the route to welcome the flame into our local area.
“It is also an opportunity for us all to celebrate the achievements of the inspirational torchbearers and share in the excitement the Olympic torch relay.”
Local residents will see inspirational torch bearers carrying the flame through the streets of Bishop's Stortford, Stansted Mountfitchet, Newport and Saffron Walden on Saturday July 7th 2012.
At 11:17am, the Olympic torch will set off down Much Hadham Road, past Bishop's Stortford Rugby Club, curve around the Causeway, make its way up Hockerill and turn onto Stansted Road.
At 11:50am, the torch will reach Stansted Mountfitchet and pass along Pines Hill, Benfleet Roard and Cambridge Road before a convoy vehicle takes the flame to Newport for 12:10pm.
The flame will then be carried along London Road to the junction with Nursery Gardens before being taken to Saffron Walden for 12:30pm, where residents can watch it travel from the junction with Beeches Close along Newport Road, down the High Street and onto Bridge Street. Once it reaches the junction with New Pond Lane in Saffron Walden, the Olympic flame will again be returned to the convoy vehicle to take it to its next destination.
