Bolton College and Bolton Council hosted an event last week to celebrate another year of resounding success for their Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities (NLDC) programme.

Eight organisations supported by the initiative came together to share their individual success stories, at the event held at Brownlow Fold Community Learning Centre in Halliwell.

NLDC, which is funded by Bolton Council and managed by the community learning and regeneration department at Bolton College, provides financial and practical support to a cross-section of organisations throughout the borough. The organisations aim to give disadvantaged learners in the community an opportunity to progress in life.

Sue Somerville, Community Learning manager, Bolton Council explained: “The scheme has been running for over nine years now, supporting the work of our voluntary organisations. It engages with individuals in hard-to-reach areas of the community, equipping them with the skills and support they need to go on to higher education or employment.”

Two special awards were presented on the evening for outstanding project management. One of the recipients was Bolton Alternative Transport, which received the award for its management of the ‘bike fix, fun and fitness’ project. This aims to help disadvantaged people learn everything they need to know about bikes, including identifying faults, road awareness and safety.

Time2Communities also received an award for its ‘communication, communication, communication’ project, which helps local unemployed people to learn computer-based communication skills, as well as building their confidence through a range of programmes and workshops.

Sharon Marriott, Director of Adult Learning and Higher Education at Bolton College, said: “The students gain invaluable experience that helps them to reach their full potential. We’re thrilled to see the scheme go from strength-to-strength and look forward to another year of learning in the community.”
