Initially an old warehouse in Bark Street “Lads Club” opened in 1889 as a hostel where the young mill workers were able to wash, eat and sleep in peace away from their looms. Fast forward 125 years, and the children and young people of Bolton are continuing to benefit from the legacy the Club’s founders left for the town. It is testament to their vision that today the Club has over 6,000 members, providing them ‘somewhere to go, something to do, someone to talk to’.
As part of Bolton Lads and Girls Club 125th Birthday Celebrations they have launched the BLGC Past-Present-Future Society. The Club, now based on Spa Road, has begun setting up an alumni programme for all former members, volunteers, mentors, members of staff, board members and patrons.
They will be holding a reunion event on Saturday 22nd November 2014 from 1-4pm as a drop in to meet up with old friends, share memories, bring along any photos andenjoy reflecting on the success of the Club over the past 125 years.
Karen Edwards OBE, Chief Executive of Bolton Lads and Girls Club commented “It gives me great pleasure to celebrate 125 years of service to the youth of Bolton with Bolton Lads and Girls Club, many things have changed over the years, but the Club’s dedication to providing young people with a safe place to spend their spare time remains at the heart of what we do. To mark the occasion we would like to celebrate with the whole community, specifically people who have great memories of the Club.
