There is excitement in Bolton as it enters the race to be granted city status in 2012.
As part of Her Majesty The Queens Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in 2012, Business Secretary Lord Mandalson announced that there would be a competition awarding city status.
Bolton has made 3 previous bids, in 1992 to mark the Queen’s 40th year as monarch, the second in 2000 for the Millennium and in 2002 for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.
As one of the largest towns in the UK Bolton is often thought of as a city already and becomming a city would give the town great opportunities for investment, growth and regeneration.
Any local authority can enter and the closing date for applications is May 27th.
