The poinsettia is known as the Christmas flower and is used to decorate many homes all over the world, and not just for Christmas! Celebrate national Poinsettia day with us on the 12th December in honour of the man whom the plant is named after!
This beautiful, vivid, red flower is indigenous to Mexico and Central America and owes its name to the man who introduced the plant into America, Joel Roberts Poinsett. This beautiful plant is actually a shrub and people sometimes mistake its bright red leaves for petals, these are known as bracts.
Its bright red colour mixed with green and the fact that its blooming season coincides with the festive holidays makes this plant the perfect flower to represent Christmas! The plant is decorative and relatively easy to care for but be careful as the Poinsettia may be toxic to animals!
To care for a Poinsettia throughout the year, make sure you don’t damage the roots by watering it by filling the outer pot in which the main plant pot is sitting. Pour the water into the pot but let it drain.
It should be positioned where it is going to get the most natural light but windows aren’t necessarily the best place as the cold from the window could damage the leaves. Try to keep the plant away from heat sources too, such as radiators.
Why not add a splash of colour to your home and purchase some beautiful flowers from Occassion Flowers this Christmas!
