Keep off the grass: storm clear-up in Lower Gardens puts lawns temporarily out of bounds

Part of Bournemouth's Lower Gardens is cordoned off this morning after flash flooding in Friday night's storms washed debris - believed to include sewerage - over the grass.

Specialist cleaning teams were out all weekend removing the debris and applying a specialist disinfectant to the grass.

Visitors to the gardens reported an unpleasant smell and a tide mark of debris marking the flood line.

Bournemouth council say the disinfectant needed to be applied several times, which is why the lawns have been cordoned off.

A spokesman said: "Throughout Friday night, various teams including Highways, worked together to respond to issues across the borough. Our cleansing & parks teams were out early on Saturday dealing with reported incidents.

"A priority was to clear the Lower Gardens and other areas, ready for a busy weekend. Although the area has been thoroughly cleansed, we are recommending that some areas of lawn in the Lower Gardens should be avoided, as a precautionary measure.

"These are clearly marked with signage and taped off. If you are heading out to enjoy our beautiful gardens, please heed the signs advising you to stay off the grass."
