This weekend I was in Holmfirth, where the Holmfirth Folk Festival was taking place.
Large numbers of tourists as well as Morris Dancers descended upon the town, and on every corner music was played whilst sticks were banged together and little bells tinkled as the strange dancing commenced.
Now. The problem I have is that I just don't get it. Why do grown men and women dress in such ridiculous costumes and dance around - usually looking melancholy and even embarrassed?
I know it is a long standing tradition - but I would really like to understand why people do this? What makes someone decide they want to be a Morris Dancer, and what do they get out of it?
Someone please enlighten me!
