Leading Bradford Chiropractor gives his expert advice on:
ARTHRITIS
Arthritis is a condition that can be managed by chiropractors, however the wear and tear changes that occur to joints cannot be reversed. When a joint has a certain amount of wear and tear (osteoarthritis) this can result in stiffness, inflammation, decreased movement and muscle tightness due to changes in the way the joint moves. Chiropractors use techniques such as mobilisation and manipulation to restore joint movement and decrease stiffness, as well as various different soft tissue techniques that can help to relieve muscle spasm and improve the function of the joint. Although arthritis cannot be cured by chiropractic, we can manage the condition to reduce pain and stiffness, and increase movement.
There are in fact many different types of arthritis, each needing to be dealt with in different ways. The most common type is osteoarthritis (resulting from wear and tear over time) which is thought to cause joint pain in 8.5 million people in the UK alone. The prevalence of osteoarthritis increases with age in the knees, hips and hands, however many younger people can suffer with arthritis, there are even juvenile forms of the disease.
