The News Shopper reported this morning that the plans for merging local colleges into a new mother-of-all-colleges have been cancelled, as a direct result of the recession and "political and financial uncertainties".
It was announced last year that the Orpington College of Further Education and Bromley College of Higher Education would be merging in a £50m project to provide improved education facilities for 12,000 students.
Apparently they were expecting funds from the Government which have been withdrawn.
Whilst it's obviously very disappointing for the planners, students and college Boards, I can't help but think that they've done the right thing in the current climate to not go ahead with the merger. £50m is a lot to spend on such a project when they might be faced with heavy criticism for the money not going elsewhere.
I wish them luck with all their plans, and hope they can find reasonable funding in the future.
