I'm so pleased that The Glades' Eco Hero Challenge, launched last summer as part of the Bromley Go Green events, has received such a positive response.
Local schools throughout Bromley, Bexley, Greenwich and Lewisham entered the competition to create a superhero model from recycled materials.
Ten finalists have had their 16 life-sized models on display in The Glades through January. Judging the competition has been through public votes and a panel of judges, and the overall winner is yet to be announced. All will be revealed at a gala dinner awards ceremony at the Wyndhal Grand Hotel in Chelsea Harbour on 26th February.
How excited are the children representing each school going to be at the dinner?! Sounds like a very posh do with reception, 3-course dinner and a presentation by Lucy Siegle, Observer columnist and environmental author.
The winning school will win £500 to use in the environmental project of its choice - perhaps they could then run an internal competition to decide what they'll spend the money on.
The ten finalists are Darrick Wood Junior, St George’s CE Primary and Warren Road Primary from Bromley; Days Lane Primary and Belmont Primary from Bexley; Rockliffe Manor Primary and Greenacres Primary from Greenwich; and Kelvin Grove Primary, St Augustine’s RC Primary and Downderry Primary from Lewisham.
It sounds like the Eco Hero Challenge has been a great success for these kids, and received a positive response from the public. It seems to have achieved what it set out to do - raise the children's awareness and enthusiasm about environmental issues. Who knows, the fun of competitions like this could result in serious achievements in the future.
