In my search for water near to Bury St Edmunds we came across one of the top 27 things to do this summer in and around Bury St Edmunds. Lackford Lakes is a delightful reserve with a rich mixture of water, woods and meadows. Plenty of birds â We took our bird book and binoculars and identified more than 20 species for us, plus small brown things too elusive for our unpractised eyes, Am sure we saw some stoats. I felt Lackford Lakes is a good place for casual visitors and children as well as experts to explore and watch birds and local wildlife and flora. There is plenty of parking (£1 voluntary charge) and a Visitor Centre open Wednesday to Sunday (annoyingly closed on the day we visited, a Tuesday), so worth choosing your day carefully. Now has anyone got any other bright ideas for a day out which costs very little but gives enormous pleasure? Call or email me burystedmunds@thebestof.co.uk We are also looking for some safe âfree swimmingâ in our county.
