ANDYSMANCLUB are a men’s suicide prevention charity offering free-to-attend peer-to-peer support groups across the United Kingdom and online.
ANDYSMANCLUB takes its name from Andrew Roberts, a lovely, doting father, son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend who sadly took his own life in early 2016.
Andy’s life was taken away by suicide, sadly and tragically, without warning. On average, one man every 2 hours takes his life in the UK. This issue is often attributed to a lack of communication among men, who may feel societal pressure to avoid discussing their mental health struggles; that’s why ANDYSMANCLUB was born.
Established in 2016 by Luke Ambler (Andy’s brother-in-law) and Elaine Roberts (Luke’s mum), the club aims to change the rhetoric around men’s mental health and open up those lines of communication. That change starts with you.
Their Bury club started with 25 men in March 2022. They are now reaching between 50-60 men every week, providing support and resources to those struggling with mental health issues and thoughts of suicide.
They aim to end the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and promote open and honest communication about these issues. They recognise that mental health challenges can affect anyone, regardless of gender or background, and strive to create a safe and supportive space for men to share their experiences and seek help without fear of judgement.
By encouraging conversations about mental health, and providing education and resources, they hope to empower men to take control of their mental well-being. Their approach is centred on empathy, compassion, and understanding, recognising that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Their clubs are designed to be free of pressure; there is no obligation for men to speak, they can simply listen if they wish.
Through their efforts, ANDYSMANCLUB hopes to create a world where men feel comfortable talking about mental health and seeking support when they need it.
