News Release from Bury College
Tanya O’Donnell, former pupil of Hollingworth High School is celebrating her success at the WKC World Championships in Karate. The final of the competition was held in November in Portugal, with Tanya achieving 3rd place in the world in the 13-17 year old, hard styles category.
The BTEC National Certificate in Sport Level 3 student from Rochdale competed against four other girls in the final, where she completed a 2 ½ minute practised routine to steal 3rd place in the competition. Tanya has been participating in karate for the last 11 years, beginning to learn the sport aged 5. Coming from a family who do karate, Tanya has had lots of support along the way. In addition to encouragement from her family, Tanya received funding from Link for Life in Rochdale as part of the talented athletes scheme. The funding helped pay towards flights, her entry fee and accommodation whilst at the World Championships.
As well as her tremendous achievement in the World Championships, Tanya was crowned British National Champion in December in London. She is also proactive in helping others learn the sport and train for competitions by teaching at Cobra Karate in Greater Manchester.
Tanya said, “I’m really pleased of my achievements. Winning competitions has inspired others at my karate club to take part, which is great. The work I do teaching karate is also helping with my course at Bury College, where volunteering and coaching are part of the criteria.”
Bury College Sport tutor, Mark Withington said, “Before going to the finals Tanya made sure she was up to date on all her work. She is a very conscientious student who loves her sport and she excels in College as much as she does in her karate. We are very proud of her achievements.”
