Vehicle owners and operators take note that Clean Air Greater Manchester is due to launch its GM Clean Air Zone on May 30th, 2022 – in just 6 months. Private cars, motorbikes and mopeds will not be affected but some vehicles that do not meet the required emissions standards (non-compliant vehicles) will be charged if driven in the Clean Air Zone. Compliant vehicles will not face the charge however non- compliant vehicles including Vans, Light Goods Vehicles, will be charged from June 1st, 2023. As the intention is to reduce harmful emissions such as nitrogen dioxide at the roadside it is worthy of change at the earliest opportunity. Greater Manchester wants people to switch to cleaner compliant vehicles before the Zone is launched (as early as possible) so as not to have to pay the charge. Government funding is available to help eligible vehicle owners, or registered keepers, to upgrade their vehicles and from late January 2022 eligible non-compliant vehicle users will be able to apply for a temporary exemption discount. This could include car-derived vans, panel or box vans, pickups, motorised horseboxes up to 3.5 tons loaded and passenger vehicles with 8 to 16 seats but not used as a taxi or private hire.
Sourcing compliant vehicles need not be stressful. There are many advantages to getting on with it now. More modern vehicles are generally more efficient with more efficient engines, electric powered alternatives and fewer gas guzzling big power units. Accepting the fact that Greater Manchester is leading the field with its Clean Air Zone in line with London and other major conurbations this is a cost-effective step towards general compliance.
