"A Bridge Too Far" at Walmersley Golf Club

When the council at Walmersley Golf Club, near Bury, decided that to speed up play, a second crossing over the water hazard in front of their 7th green should be constructed on the right hand side of that particular fairway, this is where Steve Fox (Vice Captain) and Frank Priestley (ex captain & president) stepped in.

With help from a dozen members and the greens staff over a period of weeks they constructed an impressive stone bridge. They were donated a water funnel, collected old stones off the course and were also donated an engraved plaque, all free of charge.
With a great deal of hard work and endeavour, they built a bridge that is functional, interesting and a talking point for visitors and members a like.
Work began in late April and was completed in mid July thanks to the good weather.

Paul Parry was the lucky person who won a bottle of malt whisky by naming the bridge 'A Bridge too far', a name selected from numerous suggestions sent in by the membership.
A grand opening took place on Monday the 23rd of July with Phil Brimelow (Captain) cutting the ribbon and announcing the bridge officially open and ready for use.
Also, the President, Secretary, Greens Staff and all who assisted were present at the ceremony, including a large number of members.

The plaque was fitted to one side of the bridge and engraved in remembrance of Harry Coles who passed away a few years ago.
Harry was a long serving member and past Chairman of the Bury and District Golf Association, a past Secretary of Walmersley GC and also a past President and Captain. A person who was highly respected and was a cornerstone of what is Walmersley G.C today.

Mr Tom McMahon a past President and Captain and a good friend of Mr Coles, was asked to unveil the plaque by the club and to say a few words in remembrance of Mr Coles.

Special mention must be given to Tony Pate, Dave Greenhalgh, John Kilburn and the green staff plus the Head Greens Manager Brett Hannah for their contributions, without which this construction would not have been completed.

Attached is a photo of Steve Fox (Vice captain) John Ankers (president) Tom McMahon, Phil Woodcock (manager\Secretary WGC) Phil Brimelow (Captain WGC) when the plaque was unveiled.

Second Picture is the Captain cutting the ribbon, with all those who had contributed in its construction in one way or another.
