BGS Old Boys recently celebrated Founders’ Day with Annual Dinners at the School in Bury and at The Houses of Parliament in London.
The Bury Dinner on 6th May, was attended by 159 Old Boys from all parts of the world, former masters and current masters. Headmaster, Steven Harvey, reported on the progress and achievements of our talented pupils and also of the many ambitious building developments which are planned for the future. Assembled Old Boys were left in no doubt that their School is facing the future with confidence and were delighted to hear of new initiatives and pupils’ successes.
Guest speaker at the Bury Dinner was Paul Kenyon (BGS 1984), award-winning investigative journalist with the esteemed BBC Panorama team; he has also presented ‘Paul Kenyon Confronts’ and written a best-selling book, ‘I am Justice’, to great acclaim. Paul gave a most entertaining account of his School career and spoke highly of the fine grounding his education had provided. His address was well-received by all in attendance.
Alistair Burt MP (BGS 1974), Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, was the guest speaker at the London Dinner which was held in the ambient surroundings of the Terrace Dining Room at the House of Commons. The event was well attended by Old Boys of all ages and a number of former masters. Alistair spoke with warmth and humour of his career at BGS where he is pleased to retain close links as a Patron of the Schools’ Appeal.
Alistair and Paul each remembered with affection former masters and lifelong friendships which were forged during their time at BGSB.
It is customary to celebrate annually the vision and benefaction of the Schools’ original founders; their determination and foresight has provided countless generations of pupils with a fine education. The Old Boys’ Association maintains close links with the School today and is supportive of every new venture; they maintain the tradition of generosity by providing a Sixth Form Bursary for a current BGS student.
