Year 11 GCSE Art students from Siddal Moor Sports College in Heywood enjoyed a week of art activities at Bury College last week.  The students had the opportunity to learn a wide range of techniques using different media.  Self portraits were used as inspiration for the work, which will form part of the student’s GCSE projects.

The week also gave the students the chance to experience life at Bury College.  Leilah Wright, age 15 from Heywood said, “I’ve really enjoyed it.  I hadn’t done clay making before so that was good.  The week has given me an insight into what it’s like at college and the tutors here have been really good in offering advice and helping me decide which courses to apply for at Bury College.”

Ashely Shorrock, 16 from Heywood said, “I’ve really enjoyed it and we’ve got to see what it will be like at college.”  Beth Whiteman (age 15, from Whitefield) also felt she benefitted from the week.  She said, “We’ve done different activities every day using all different media.  I enjoyed the digital photography the most because that’s something we don’t do in school.”

Mrs Cowley, teacher from Siddal Moor Sports College in Heywood said, “The week has gone very well and the students now have a wide range of work to use for their GCSE projects.  Everyone’s really enjoyed it and it’s given them an idea of what to expect when they come to college.”

An evening was held on Monday 29th Nov where students invited their parents and showcased their work in an exhibition at Bury College.  Certificates were awarded for achievements over the week.

Tim Robson, Director of 14-16, HE and High School Liaison at Bury College said, “The event provided an excellent opportunity for the pupils to gain experience in a wide range of creative processes.  They have worked really hard this week and the quality of the work they have produced has been fantastic.”
