Dementia Awareness Week runs from Sunday (20 May) to Saturday 26 May, and fundraising events will be taking place all week to raise money for the dementia charities Making Space and the Alzheimer’s Society.

There are all sorts of ways you can get involved:

• Get up and jive to the 1930s/40s/50s at the “We’ll Meet again” Tea Dance on Wednesday 23 May at 12.30pm at the Longfield Suite, Prestwich. There will be live music from Plane Reasons, tea and cakes, a raffle and a guest appearance from Alistair Burns, the Government’s “dementia tsar”. Tickets are £5 and are available on the door.

• Grab your colleagues, friends and family and enter a team for the bowling challenge. Strike out and have a go on Wednesday 23 May at AMF Bowling, The Rock, Bury, from 7pm – and there are prizes for the winners! To enter, contact activeworkforce@bury.gov.uk or 0161 253 5893. Teams must be between four and eight players, and entry is £6 per player.

• Take part in a Sponsored Walk on Saturday 26 May at Bury Athletics Track. It costs £2 to enter and you can choose to do the Bronze, Silver or Gold Walk. The walks start at noon (registration from 11am) and you can meet celebrity guest Judy Holt, who plays Lesley Kershaw in “Coronation Street”.

• If walking is too much effort, Saturday’s event also boasts a family fun day, with live music, activities, refreshments and information. You could also win raffle prizes and take part in Zumba.

• Family history sessions are held at Bury Library (Reference and Information) on Monday 21 May (2-3pm) and Wednesday 23 May (11am-noon). Staff will help you research your family history or show you what resources are available to help you do it yourself.

Many more events will be taking place at Grundy Day Care Centre, Rose Court and Bankfield, and there will be collection boxes across the borough during the week.

For more information about all of these events, contact 0161 253 6021 or adultcarecomms@bury.gov.uk and help us raise money for dementia in borough.
