A new tourism masterplan aims to bring many more people to Ramsbottom by building on its strengths as a popular visitor draw.
The Ramsbottom Destination Strategy was drawn up by tourism experts Locum Consulting, in consultation with the Ramsbottom Business Group. It follows a recent ten-year development strategy carried out on behalf of the East Lancashire Railway Trust in which Ramsbottom was identified as the key stop on the East Lancashire Railway route.
This latest study looks at a wide range of options and opportunities for Ramsbottom, including the development of a Ramsbottom brand, marketing and events and improved signage. The study also looks at ways to attract visitors such as a boutique hotel and an outdoor adventure centre to capitalise on Ramsbottom's rural location.
Councillor Jane Lewis, executive member for leisure, tourism and culture, said: 'Ramsbottom is already popular with visitors but has the potential to attract even more.
'The latest research shows that visitor numbers are on the increase which is really positive news. This has been helped by events such as the Ramsbottom Chocolate Festival and Christmas markets which raise the profile of the area. The destination plan will guide both long and short term activity and help to ensure that Ramsbottom remains a thriving market town and continues to develop as a visitor destination.'
