Tucked away in the rolling hills above Bury, Walmersley Golf Club has been a haven for golf enthusiasts since its founding in 1906. What began as a solution to the growing demand for golf in the area has blossomed into one of Bury’s most treasured gems. Steeped in history and tradition, the club offers a unique blend of heritage, community, and an ever-improving course that continues to challenge and delight players of all abilities.
A Journey Through Time
Walmersley Golf Club’s story begins when Bury Golf Club, then located at Redvales, found itself overwhelmed by the popularity of the game. To cater to the demand, land was secured across a few farms, giving birth to the original nine-hole course. This early layout spanned what are now the 1st, 2nd, 6th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th holes. A glowing article in the Bury Times at the time celebrated the course as “a breezy and bracing site,” setting the tone for its future reputation.
Over the next 60 years, the club thrived. Members rolled up their sleeves and worked together to develop the course, build the clubhouse, and even construct the now-familiar access road. It was a true labour of love, with the course earning praise as an “excellent nine holes.”
The story didn’t stop there. Additional land at Broomses Farm was acquired in the late 1980s, paving the way for the creation of holes 13 to 16. By 1995, Walmersley unveiled its new 18-hole course, which brought with it new challenges and a growing membership.
Not ones to rest on their laurels, the club pushed forward again in the late 1990s, acquiring land west of the M66 motorway. This allowed the addition of holes 3, 4, and 5, transforming the course into the Par 71 layout enjoyed today. Officially opened in 2009, the extended course provides a challenging yet rewarding experience, with an SSS of 70.

From its early days, Walmersley Golf Club has been a club run by members, for members. This ethos has fostered a sense of camaraderie and pride that’s still very much alive today. Whether it’s welcoming new members, hosting local events, or contributing to the success of the Bury & District Golf Association, the spirit of togetherness defines Walmersley.
