Do I need anti-virus software?

Anyone familiar with the internet knows the huge business opportunities and benefits it can bring, but it also brings risks.

It is increasingly important to manage these risks to take advantage of the internet whilst protecting your business, however, many people still don’t see the need to have quality Anti-Virus protection.

Here at DTE IT Support we understand that good cyber security can enhance the reputation of your business and open up a world of new commercial opportunities.

Here are just a few reasons why every company should have Anti-Virus protection.

Protection from Viruses

Viruses are a common type of attack. Most of us know better than to download suspicious files or follow dodgy links to phishing websites, we probably think that we could spot an attack before it does any damage. But hackers get smarter every day and are constantly finding new ways to infiltrating your system. Some even pose as legitimate anti-virus software! Once the virus has “infected” your computer system it can wreak havoc; causing file loss, slowing your whole processing system down, permanent lost of data and thousands of pounds in repairs.

Protection from Spyware and Identity Theft

It may sound a bit James Bond but yes Spyware does exactly what it says, it actually spies on you. Crafty spyware can steal all of your personal information, such as financial data, customer details, passwords, and credit card numbers. Once it has this it can lead to identity theft and/or money being lost from accounts. This can happen to anyone, but businesses are specifically at risk, your company’s reputation would take a huge hit if you were compromised.

Protection from Spam

A bit of spam might not sound like such a bad thing, however a flooded inbox could be the sign that a severe virus has burrowed its way into your computer. Plus, if your inbox is constantly full of spam it may mean you’re missing vital emails and not getting access to important information.

Small businesses should consider adding network security equipment such as firewalls, virtual private networks (VPNs), intrusion prevention systems (IPS) and network access controllers (NACs).

Think about your housekeeping routine, regularly remove unused software and user accounts and establish physical security controls for all computer equipment. Maintain backups of critical files and software and limit access to sensitive and confidential data. Most importantly, get technical expertise and outside help when you need it.
