Thebestofbury team asked Managing Director Suzanne Edmonds of Square Peg Associates:

How did your Career in Recruitment begin, after 10yrs of driving success with Square Peg Associates, you must be very proud?

“It’s in my DNA now!!!” I guess that no-one leaves school wanting to be a Recruiter, though what career choice to have that after 25+ years, it still leaves you excited when you place someone in a Dream Role?”

“In all honesty, I fell into it via a very good friend who worked at the Jobcentre, after I attended Art College!!”

Following-on my career path included:

1990’s - Burnley Job Centre Careers Adviser and Recruitment Co-ordinator-Training Provider

2000’s - Training and Recruitment Manager

2002 - First role within a Recruitment Agency in Manchester City Centre

2012 - Set up Square Peg Associates from home after having son Harry. 8 months later secured a Bizspaceoffice overlooking Cronkeyshaw Common in Syke, Rochdale.

6 years later Suzanne relocated to The BusinessLodge Bury and currently works a hybrid role blending home and office.

In your experience, what are the main challenges facing recruiters presently compared to 2012 when you started out?

 “The main challenge I hear about regularly from recruiters is the increasing demands from candidates.

A significant cause of candidate shortage is that people expect much more from employers than before Covid-19. The pandemic and the necessary mitigation policies such as working from home have changed the game in terms of what people think is a fair deal.

Candidates are looking for better pay, increased flexibility, and more control over their working arrangements – recruiters have to match these high expectations, making it more challenging to match people to a role. It also makes the hiring landscape much more competitive.

I’ve recruited since the 90’s and experienced lots of peaks and troughs in the sector though managed to sustain good business networks of both Candidates and Clients which helps massively as well as having a good referrable network. Square Peg are still busy and successfully placing quality candidates”

Have you seen more recruiters adopting automation over the last year?‍

“As automation is becoming commonplace across many industries, recruiters are acknowledging the value of automating their admin-heavy tasks to save time. Although we are technically improving at Square Peg, I still believe that our personal service speaks volumes, and our Clients agree and like our approach.

We have updated our website to include:

  • Online candidate registration process which will be followed up with our thorough interview and screening process
  • Online process for clients to submit vacancies which will then be discussed at length in order for us to source the right talent for individual businesses
  • Access to guides and downloads for client and candidates including: interview tips & questions, how to structure an interview, guide to on-boarding staff, how to look for key traits in candidates and much more that may be found in the client area of the website!
