If, like me, you’re planning on spending the evening breaking your heart over soggy bottoms and thinking of a more exotic ingredient than pesto, you may want to tune into BBC One at 8pm tonight.
A fantastic hour of baking innuendos and some interesting personalities, it’s easy to see why The Great British Bake Off is such a hit with people of all ages. Mary Berry is a fabulous cook whose recipe books grace the shelves of many a homeowner, whilst all of our mums try to pretend they’re not swooning over Paul Hollywood’s piercing blue stare, and Mel and Sue are the dynamic duo who bring a hilarious atmosphere to the tent, reminding us that the contestants are fighting it out… over cake.
Not only do we get to feast our eyes on a delicious array of cakes, bakes and sugary sweets, but year on year, GBBO inspires people across the nation to dig out their wooden spoons, pick a recipe and just give it a go, which results in some fantastic (and some terrible) concoctions.
Each year, GBBO gives us some brilliant characters who we can relate to and laugh along with, and here are just a few of my personal favourites….
- Nadiya, winner of season 6 and master of ever-changing facial expressions! She wrapped up the last season with a quote which many of us can relate to:

- Tamal, runner-up of season 6, winner of every single viewers’ heart!
- Norman. Oh, Norman, have you yet found an ingredient more exotic than pesto?

- Chetna took flavours to a whole new level, introducing tastes from across the world, and her caramel tower and work with sugar was a feat to behold!
- Ruby, almost-winner of season 4, she cooked up some beautiful bakes with a touch of perfectionism!
This year, I’ll be baking along with Bake-Off and I’d love to see your creations too! So whether you’re perfecting the crack in your madeira cake or you’re struggling with ganache-ing your buns, share your stories in the comments below!
