There’s a packed weekend of public events coming up in Bury this weekend – and everyone is invited.
Firstly, the town centre comes alive on Friday (14 Oct) with Bury Light Night. From 5pm until late, venues across the town will open their doors and invite you to enjoy a wonderful mix of arts, music, performance, and much more. Expect an array of unusual events against a backdrop of lit-up buildings and animated public spaces. (www.facebook.com/burylightnight)
Then on Saturday (15 Oct), everyone is invited to the official re-dedication of Union Square (opposite Bury Town Hall, at Knowsley Place). The original Union Square dated back to the 18th century and was the starting point for the famous Whit Walks, but was demolished in the 1960s. A parade will leave Bury Parish Church at noon, heading for the new Union Square where a formal service, music and entertainment will take place.
And then, there’s the annual gruelling challenge of Lancashire Road Club Open Hill Climb up The Rake in Ramsbottom on Sunday (16 Oct).
There will be road closures during these events as follows:
• Bury Light Night – Bolton Street will be closed in both directions from Castle Leisure Centre to the East Lancs Railway station, from 6pm to midnight. The Rock will also be closed, from 6pm to midnight, from outside Bury Parish Church to the pedestrianised area (next to RBS).
• Union Square – Knowsley Street will be closed in both directions from the Q Park to Angouleme Way from 10am to 2pm. There will also be rolling road closures from Market Place to Union Square (along Silver Street, Manchester Road and Angouleme Way) from noon to 12.30pm during the parade.
• Rake hill climb - The Rake will be closed from Chapel Lane to Carr Street from 11.45am to 1.45pm, with diversions via Lumb Carr Road and Bolton Road West/Bolton Street.
