Passing your driving test and getting your first car is an exciting time and a fantastic achievement! However, insurance costs are definitely something to bear in mind as they can end up being expensive for first time drivers.

Graham and the team from Get Driving Today are the best driving instructors in Bury and not only do they guide you up until your test date, they also offer support for once you pass - here are some of their top tips for keeping the cost of your car insurance down as a first time drivers.

1 - Pass Plus

Pass Plus is an additional qualification for drivers who have just passed their driving test.

In Pass Plus lessons, you are taught skills that you may not necessarily cover in your initial driving lessons;

- Driving on a motorway
- Driving at night
- Driving in more challenging weather conditions
- Driving on rural roads
- Driving in town centres

2 - Secure your car

Securing your car is a brilliant tip as not only is your car more secure, you are saving money! Fitting an alarm, immobiliser or tracking device can decrease the cost of your insurance as you are considered less of a risk, as long as the insurer has acknowledged and approved it.

3 - Black box

A black box installation is a popular option for many first time drivers; they are able to track speed, the time of day you are driving, braking and cornering. This is a good opportunity for new drivers as it allows you to demonstrate how capable you are behind a wheel, rather than an insurer making a judgement, and you are likely to receive a smaller quote!

4 - Choosing your vehicle

When choosing your first car, it is worth bearing in mind the size of the car engine. Cars with a smaller engine are likely to be in a lower insurance group - the same applies for your road tax!

5 - Pay insurance annually

Although it can seem more convenient and affordable to pay your insurance monthly rather than annually, a first time driver can end up saving a considerable amount of money by paying upfront! If you are looking to save that extra bit of money in the long run, paying annually is well worth it.
