News Release from Bury College

16 employers from the hair, beauty and holistic industry attended Bury College last week (10th -14th Jan 2011) as part of Industry Week at the College.  Employers were invited to inspire students with innovative and informative demonstrations and talks over the week.

A wide range of companies attended the College, including: Gregory Couzens Hair Salon, Freddie’s, Dermalogica, Ellisons, Hannah Cohen, Chantelle Barbering, Glitter Tours, Tooth Fairy, White Rock, Minx Nails, Steiner Cruise Ships, Capelli Design, Claxton’s Salon, Brierley Duff Salon, The Modern School of Ancient Therapies and Inland Revenue Manchester.

Jade Lyons, Creative Stylist and Matt Threlfall, Artistic Director at Freddie’s Hairdressers in Rawtenstall attended the College to talk to students and provide them with a practical demonstration on how to colour, cut and style hair.  Matt said, “It’s great to bring the salon environment into the College to develop the student’s understanding of hairdressing as a whole.  By taking part in events like this we can help train the next generation of hairdressers, giving them the skills employers want.”

In addition to hairdressing, students had the opportunity to experience first-hand many processes and techniques, such as barbering, hot stone massage therapy, hopi ear candles, reiki/meditation, hands free massage, crystal therapy, nail extensions, spray tanning, Indian head massage, trichology, yoga and talks on careers and freelancing in the industry.

Emily Simpson (age 18) Level 3 Hairdressing student, formerly of Bury Church, said, “It’s been really good.  The professional hairdressers have been giving advice on how to progress in the industry after College.  It has been interesting to see the options available and what you can achieve.”

Clare Loe (age 17), former Elton High School student is studying Level 3 Hairdressing at Bury College.  She said, “I’ve found it useful seeing the different techniques and tips the professional hairdressers use.”

Pat Kelsall, Hairdressing Curriculum Manager at Bury College said, “We’d like to thank all the companies who have been involved this week.  It has been very motivating for the students who have been inspired by all the opportunities available to them when they leave College.”
