Tenants are currently being charged hundreds of pounds when looking for a home, but from June this is all set to change.
From 1st June, all that landlords will be able to charge their tenants for will be:
- Rent
- Refundable deposit
- Refundable holding deposit when initially holding the property
- If the tenant requests to finish their lease earlier
- Any faults from the tenant, such as lost keys or fines from late payments.
This ban of letting fees applies to all new tenancies that get signed on or after 1st June 2019. In regards to properties signed before this date, the ban applies in the renewal of tenancies.
Banned fees
The fees that will be banned going forward are:
- Charging for a guarantor form
- Credit checks
- Inventories
- Cleaning services
- Referencing
- Professional cleaning
- Having the property de-flead as a condition of allowing pets in the property
- Admin charges
- Requirements to have specific insurance providers
- Gardening services
