Starting a business is no easy feat. In fact, over 60% of start-ups in the UK don’t make it past their first two years. But in Bury, a new initiative is here to give local entrepreneurs a fighting chance.
In September 2024, Made in Bury launched its much-anticipated Interest-Free Business Loans, designed exclusively for start-ups in the borough of Bury. This not-for-profit initiative provides loans ranging from £2,000 to £5,000, giving new businesses a crucial financial boost during those tricky early stages.
A Legacy of Supporting Start-Ups
Made in Bury has been at the heart of the local business community for years. The Made in Bury Business Academy, founded in 2016 by Debi and Phil Fellone, has already made a significant impact. With 166 start-ups under its wing, the Academy has offered coaching, mentoring, and a support network to help new businesses thrive.
Now, with the launch of the Interest-Free Loans, Made in Bury is completing the puzzle, adding financial backing to its impressive list of support services.
Why Interest-Free Loans?
For many start-ups, accessing funding can be a massive hurdle. Traditional lenders like banks and credit unions often turn down applications from new businesses, leaving passionate entrepreneurs stuck. That’s where Made in Bury steps in.
The loans are designed to act as a "lender of last resort," giving those with brilliant ideas or innovative services the chance to grow when other doors have closed. Whether it’s for new equipment, marketing, or launching a project, these loans could be the lifeline a business needs.
Since the September 2024 launch, two loans have been approved by the Loan Panel; £5,000 to Niel Silverman from Printabulous in October 2024 and £2,000 to Wayne Oliver Plumbing & Heating in November 2024.
How It Works
The application process is refreshingly straightforward, and most types of businesses are eligible to apply. Applications are reviewed by the Made in Bury Patrons, a panel of trusted and experienced business owners from Bury, who meet regularly to assess and approve requests.
Once approved, the funds are made available quickly, helping entrepreneurs focus on what matters most – building their businesses.
