Microsoft has ended support for Windows 7: what does that mean for your business?

When Microsoft announced that they would no longer provide support or security updates for Windows 7 after 14 January 2020, the news was not warmly welcomed by the millions of users who are still using this popular operating system in both personal and business settings. However, a large number of Windows 7 users may still be unaware of this change and the impact it may cause to them and/or their business.

What has happened recently?

January 2020 marked the end of support for Windows 7 after ten years. This cessation was actually a transition that Microsoft started five years ago, when they ended ‘mainstream’ support for Windows 7. Nevertheless, from 14 January 2020, Windows 7 officially entered its ‘end of life’ phase, causing substantial impacts to its current users, particularly business users.

To put it briefly, this move means that Microsoft no longer provides support or security updates for devices running on Windows 7 and businesses which continue to use this operating system will have higher risk of being exposed to IT issues such as cyber attacks, unrecoverable data losses, viruses, malwares and so on.

What are the solutions?

There are essentially three alternative solutions that you can consider if you currently are still using Windows 7:

1. Upgrading your current PCs to Windows 10

More than 950 million devices are now using Windows 10. Part of Microsoft 365, Windows 10 uses the power and insights of the cloud to provide their most secure and productive experience to date. Microsoft’s recent update 1909 version has introduced some great features including the new Windows Search experience within File Explorer, the new cloud clipboard, history viewing and more importantly Microsoft Bitlocker to keep your device secure.

Thanks to the breakthrough in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, Microsoft have built a new operating system with embedded tools to help users take advantage of new forms of productivity. Microsoft have also worked on making their new Windows 10 more secure than ever.

With cyber attacks and security breaches dramatically evolving every day, Windows 10 is a strong alternative to the ten-year-old Windows 7, keeping users, especially business users, secure in the cyber space and ensure their best possible day-to-day operation.

2. Purchasing a new set of PCs with Windows 10

If your PCs are slightly old anyway, you may think it would be more convenient to replace them with a whole new set of PCs. However, with a typical low-end laptop/desktop costing £300 – £400 and more advanced business machines (with higher specs) costing around £500 – £800, the total cost of new purchases can be significantly higher than upgrading to get more out of your current machines.

3. Upgrading part of your hardware and software

Many of our clients have found this to be the best of both worlds: upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 to ensure your operating system is secure and up to date, while also upgrading from SATA disks to SSD disks instead of having to buy whole new PCs.

SSD disks are 10 times faster than the older SATA disks that came with Windows 7 PCs. Upgrading to this disk together with a new Windows 10 operating system will improve your performance massively and bring a new lease of life into your current computers.
