The new Mayor of Bury is Unsworth councillor Joan Grimshaw, who took over the chains of office on Wednesday (16 May).
Born in Prestwich, Cllr Grimshaw was a nurse for 33 years and has lived in Unsworth since 1965. Her husband Paul will be the Mayor's Consort, and the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last year.
Cllr Grimshaw (70) is chairman of the Hollins Village Community Association and the Hollins Village Bowling Club, and secretary of Whitefield's Elms Community Centre.
She has chosen Bury Hospice, Caritas Care and Hurdles as the main beneficiaries of the Mayoral Charity Appeal.
The mayor's chaplain will be Father Christopher Lough, of St Bernadette's Church in Whitefield. The annual mayoral service took place on Sunday (20 May) at St Bernadette's.
Cllr Grimshaw said: 'It's great honour to be chosen as the new mayor, and we will do our very best to fulfil our duties and repay the trust that has been placed in us.'
The new deputy mayor is Besses ward councillor Alan Matthews, who was mayor in 1989-90 and is now the longest serving member of the council.
