As a PR firm we rely on the constant buzz of communication to do our job properly. In fact when, at times, the phone doesn’t ring or our computers have gone down we don’t relish the moments of peace. We panic.
From the noise of computers, phones, televisions, radios, modern communication tools have made switching off nearly impossible. There seems no escape.
Maybe then it’s no surprise some people just want some peace and quiet. So much so that five people have volunteered to go to a Jesuit retreat and remain silent for eight days.
So who would choose to cut themselves off from the world?
Well, three out of the five people who volunteered came from media and PR backgrounds – surprisingly!
And, even in the music charts, a push for silence is gathering pace. The annual race for the Christmas number one could this year have John Cage's silent composition 4'33" among the running, with the help of a Facebook campaign.
Who would have thought? Even being silent can be great PR.
