News Release from Bury College

Five Bury College students have been selected to appear in the Young Writers latest Poetry Anthology as part of the national Poetry Matters competition.  The anthology will be published on February 28th 2011 and judging will now begin to find individual winners.

The Young Writers competition promotes poetry and creative writing, allowing students the opportunity to showcase their work in print.  Successful students include Mary Ainsworth and Jack Dobiecki-Davies previously of Philips High School, Peter Richardson, former Withins High School student, Laura Rugadza who joined us from Balderstone High School and Ghazal Choudhary who studied in Pakistan before joining Bury College.

Mary is studying AS English Literature, English Language, Fine Art and Drama and Theatre.  Mary wrote about her Dad, who died when she was 3 years old.  She said, “My Dad wrote poetry to my Mum when he was alive and looking through his work inspired me to start writing when I was at high school.”  The last few lines of Mary’s poem reads as: “I wish I could relieve the pain you left in your wake, I know I can’t, my mistake.”

Ghazal studies AS English Language, Psychology, Sociology and Media at Bury College.  Her poem was about Child Abuse, which is a subject that is very important to her.  Ghazal said, “I was surprised and happy when I received the letter and the certificate in the post.”

Laura’s poem was about heartbreak between a boy and a girl.  She said, “I was really happy to hear I had made the book, it’s very exciting.  When it comes out in February I will definitely be getting a copy.”  Laura is currently studying AS English Language and Literature, Media Studies, Film Studies and Textile Fashion.

Peter, age 18, is currently studying BTEC Extended Diploma in Music.  Peter wrote his poem, which is about diversity and seasonal change, and entered it into the competition when he saw the posters in College.  He said, “When I heard I won I was proud of myself.  It was a shock but I was holding out for it.”
