The Barracks, which sits on Bolton Road in the town, was formerly the regimental depot of the Lancashire Fusiliers.
Amongst the regiment’s roll of honour were the six Victoria Crosses (VCs) earned ‘before breakfast’ by soldiers from the regiment during the Gallipoli campaign of 1915.
Now, as we approach 100 years since the end of the First World War, the building’s current owners are to mark the centenary with an open, commemorative event on Sunday 9 September 2018.
The Band & Corps of Drums of The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (Lancashire) – the regiment which the Lancashire Fusiliers went on to become – will be in attendance, as will representatives from the Royal British Legion’s poppy appeal, the Fusiliers Association, the Fusiliers Museum in Bury and Bury Borough Veterans.
Some of the so-called ‘Ghost soldiers’ who appeared around the UK on the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme will be at the event and a food stand will be serving authentic WWI meals.
There will also be an artisan food and craft market set up in the Barracks’ car park.
Aidan Minogue, the Managing Director of Circle Leasing Ltd which owns the building, said: “We’re proud to go about our daily work in a building that has such a proud history and we felt it only right that we honour the centenary of the end of a conflict which had such an effect on the Lancashire Fusiliers.
“The band and corps of drums played at the opening of our offices in 2013 and we’re looking forward to them providing a fitting musical backdrop to the commemoration,” he added.
The event, which runs from 1 pm to 4.30pm on Sunday 9 September, will be held at the Barracks which is located at 400 Bolton Road, Bury, BL8 2DA.
Members of the public wishing to attend the event can park their cars at nearby Westbury Sports Complex on Bexley Drive in Bury. Its postcode for satellite navigation purposes is BL8 2XD.
